Poonam Jhawer is a successful Indian film actress who has portrayed the role of Gopi Maiya, a sexy sanyasi (as termed by the media), a take on the self-styled controversial God-woman Radhe Maa in a satirical comedy-drama ‘OMG – Oh My God!’. She was also seen in Prabhu Deva’s ‘R…Rajkumar’ in the role of Bindu.
Having started her career as a fashion model, she featured in commercials for brands like ‘Killer Jeans’, ‘Dove Soap’, ‘Paneri Sarees’ amongst many others. She also appeared on the cover of ‘Debonair’ magazine.
ACTING
Her acting career began with a Hindi blockbuster film ‘Mohra’ which starred Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Naseeruddin Shah. She played Priya Agnihotri, wife of actor Suniel Shetty in the film. A dance item in the film “Na kajre ke dhaar…” rendered by Pankaj Udhas received tremendous accolades and is even appreciated today. Later the film got nine Filmfare nominations. ‘Deewana Hoon Main Tera’, ‘The Black and White Fact’, ‘Muthbhed – A Planned Encounter’ are some of the meaningful Hindi films in her kitty. She turned film producer with a critically acclaimed film, ‘Aanch’, featuring powerful actors like Nana Patekar and Paresh Rawal. As a cherry topping on the cream, Jhawer began her music career as a singer with the song “Sun Meri Raani…” sung with Nana Patekar for this film; which was one of the highlights. Jhawer has 9 music videos and 3 music albums to her credits which includes, “Poo4u”, “Take Me Home Baby”, “Poo Kya Jalwa” and many more. Her acting assignments stretched to regional cinemas too with many pivotal roles in Southern film industry. Recently she produced a Marathi film called ‘Sansarachi Maya’, under her production house, 21st New Century Films. It was a hard-hitting social drama revolving ‘blind faith’ and ‘superstition’. Meanwhile, a couple of films, shows and music videos are being designed which are in its pre-production stages. She is an activist and social reformer and had appeared with Anna Hazare vowing her support during his hunger strike to curb corruption in India supporting the Jan Lokpal Bill and for the establishment of Lokpal Offices in India. Jhawer is presently working with various women groups and NGOs. By nature and heart she is a philanthropist. She is even working on one of the initiatives of our Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make In India’ to spread awareness and seeking fundamental changes in the dominant existing systems.Born into a business class family, who hails from Rajasthan, she had completed her schooling and graduation in Mumbai. Her mother Poojashree is a renowned Hindi, Marwari and Urdu writer – poetess – lyricist, who has written many books and performed lot of ‘Kavi Sammelans’. She has also written for various magazines, newspapers and was awarded too. Likewise, with this book, Poonam Jhawer too has a favorable trait and the nature has endowed her the talent of writing.
